The Sacred Trails of Ramayana - Sri Lanka
Connecting sacred geography across the island, this comprehensive eleven-day spiritual pilgrimage explores key sites, temples, and legends tied to the ancient Ramayana epic. Setting off north along the coastal road from Colombo, the pilgrimage commences at Munneswaram and Manavari Kovil in Chilaw, revered as sacred locations where Lord Rama installed consecrated Shiva lingams. Continuing across the ancient northern plains and causeways through Elephant Pass, the route leads onto the Jaffna peninsula and across the sea waters to Nagadeepa.
Journeying eastward to Trincomalee, travellers visit the clifftop Koneswaram Kovil perched above Swami Rock and Ravana’s Cleft, alongside the sacred geothermal wells of Kanniya. Moving south through the fragrant spice gardens of Matale, the route ascends into the royal hill sanctuary of Kandy to visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic.
Climbing deeper into the Central Highlands, pilgrims explore the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple at Ramboda, the revered Sita Amman Temple and Ashoka Vatika in Sita Eliya, the botanical caves and tunnels of Ravana Ella, and the scorched earth landscapes of Ussangoda. The journey concludes at the sacred multi-faith shrine of Kataragama before returning via the coastal expressway to Colombo for an urban orientation tour. Backed by private vehicle logistics and dedicated operational coordination, this itinerary offers verified daily pacing and thoughtful pilgrimage access.
