Overview
Fortresses & Footprints: The Heritage & Wilderness Loop
This seven-day round tour brings together Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, highland terrain, big-game wildlife habitats, and southern coastal fortifications. Departing the western coast, the route moves inland past Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage into the dry-zone Cultural Triangle to Sigiriya. Here, travellers ascend King Kashyapa’s 5th-century rock fortress and explore the painted cave sanctuaries of Dambulla.
Heading south through the spice gardens of Matale, the journey reaches Kandy, the island’s final royal kingdom. After paying homage at the lakeside Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and viewing traditional Kandyan drumming recitals, the route climbs into the mist-covered elevations of Nuwara Eliya. Guests tour working tea estates and colonial landmarks before descending through the dramatic gaps and ravines of Ella toward the southern dry zone.
In Yala National Park, an open 4×4 jeep safari offers opportunities to track wild Asian elephants, sloth bears, and leopards. The final leg traces the southern shoreline, discovering the 17th-century ramparts of Galle Dutch Fort and coastal turtle preservation projects before concluding in Colombo.
