Overview
Caves & Fortress Trail
Experience the architectural mastery, military engineering, and sacred temple heritage of the northern Deccan on this compact two-day itinerary. Beginning in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), travel west to explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ellora Caves, highlighted by the monumental Kailasa Temple—the world’s largest monolithic rock-cut structure carved top-down from a single basalt cliff. Pay homage at the sacred Grishneshwar Temple, one of the twelve revered Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, before climbing the tiered defenses of the medieval Daulatabad Fort, renowned for its moat, Chand Minar, and dark labyrinthine maze. The first day concludes with a visit to the Bibi Ka Maqbara, widely known as the “Taj of the Deccan”.
The second day leads northeast across the Marathwada plateau to the dramatic horseshoe-shaped canyon of the Waghora River gorge to explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ajanta Caves. Here, marvel at ancient rock-cut Buddhist chaityas and viharas holding classical narrative murals, Jataka fresco paintings, and the colossal Reclining Buddha dating from the 2nd century BCE to the 5th century CE. The tour finishes back in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) with an introduction to traditional regional loom crafts before your departure.
